We live surrounded by substances we don't notice, but which can cause different pathologies such as asthma, headaches, dizziness or a weakening immune system, among other symptoms. These reactions are due to the fact that the air we breathe in closed spaces is from 2 to 8 times more polluted than the air outside. Substances such as benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, trichlorethylene, ammonia or xylene are around us; and although there are new and sophisticated air purifying systems, nature and its wisdom provide us with more sustainable and green solutions.
In 1989, the US space agency, more commonly known as NASA, developed a list of types of plants that filter air pollutants. These are some of the most common:
- Spider plant (Chlorosphytum comosum)
This broad-leaved and long plant is very common as a decorative home element. But some people don't know it's one of the best plants to filter out toxic substances such as formaldehyde. It also purifies the air from xylene, toluene or carbon monoxide.
- Snakeplant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
It's a very popular indoor plant, both in homes and offices, which sifts toxic substances from the environment. In this case, it fights formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, trichlorethylene or benzene.
- Ficus robusta
It comes from India and Indonesia, and one of its benefits is that it removes the much-dreaded formaldehyde from our spaces. In addition, thanks to its high transpiration capacity, it allows the regulation of humidity in the environment.
- The sword fern (Nephrolepis exalta)
The nephrolepis exalta is one of the allies we have to purify closed environments, filtering the toxic formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene. Just like the ficus robusta, it also regulates the existing humidity.
There are other plants with the same purifying properties, which can be toxic to pets though. We recommend considering the disadvantages and peculiarities of each plant before purchasing one.
If you have already decided to purify your environment and you are aware of which plants you want to use, we can provide you with the perfect hydro plants for your space.
